Why the Future Belongs to Those Who Belong Everywhere
Growing up across 3 different countries, I learned early on that the world is a kaleidoscope of perspectives. As a Third Culture Kid (TCK), entrepreneur, mother, and coach, my life has been defined by navigating different cultures, systems, and ways of being.
When you spend your formative years immersed in multiple cultural environments, you realize something profound: there is no single “right” way to live, solve a problem, or structure a society. You see different educational models, healthcare systems, political frameworks, and ways of relating to one another—and you realize they all work in their own ways.
This lived experience leads to a powerful realization: Cross-Cultural Kids (CCKs) carry immense, untapped potential to help solve today’s greatest global challenges.
What is a Cross-Cultural Kid?
Coined by author Ruth E. Van Reken, a Cross-Cultural Kid (CCK) is someone who has been significantly influenced by two or more cultural environments during their developmental years. This includes bicultural and multicultural children, Third Culture Kids, children of immigrants, refugees or borderlanders, educational CCKs, international adoptees, mixed-heritage children, children of marginalized or privileged minorities.
Because CCKs navigate multiple worlds, they develop unique competencies:
- A broader worldview and natural cultural humility.
- High tolerance for ambiguity—they are comfortable not having all the answers right away.
- Multilingualism and advanced intercultural communication skills.
- Transcultural competence—the rare ability to transcend single cultural frameworks to synthesize something entirely new.
Where others see rigid boundaries, CCKs naturally see connections. They are innate systems thinkers.
The Hidden Complexity: What Holds CCKs Back?
Having potential is one thing; feeling empowered to use it is another. Before CCKs can step up to transform the world, they often have to navigate deep, quiet internal struggles:
- Identity: Asking “Who am I really – deep down?” and “How can I be authentic and true to myself while navigating different cultural environments?”
- Belonging: “Where is home?” and struggling to feel fully rooted when you belong everywhere and nowhere at once.
- Finding Their Voice: After years of adapting, shape-shifting, or code-switching to fit into whatever room they walk into, many CCKs struggle to speak up authentically. They may shrink back, afraid of being misunderstood or standing out too much.
- Inner Restlessness: A persistent feeling of needing to move, change, or search for the next horizon rather than being grounded in the present.
- Unresolved Grief & Transgenerational Trauma: Processing the cumulative, often unacknowledged losses of people, places, and roles left behind with every transition.
A Vision & Mission for the Future
My Vision is to help build a better world for generations to come—a world where Cross-Cultural Kids are empowered to navigate their complex inner worlds, embrace their uniqueness, and unlock their full potential to lead global change so they can thrive with their transformation competence.
My Mission is to guide Adult CCKs through these exact struggles. Through coaching, mentoring, community building, and leadership development, I help CCKs step into self-leadership so they can build genuine bridges across communities.
Healing the Inside to Change the Outside
To unlock a CCK’s transformational potential, we must start from within. Using Inner Team Method Coaching, I work with CCKs to:
- Foster Self-Leadership: Reconnect with their core identity beyond external adaptation.
- Transform Wounds into Superpowers: Process unresolved grief, integrate past moves, and address personal or transgenerational trauma.
- Embrace Inner Diversity: Harmonize all the different cultural “parts” of themselves into a cohesive whole.
- Claim Their Voice: Step out of the shadows, speak their truth with clarity, and lead wholeheartedly.
Moving Forward Together
When we truly arrive within ourselves, we stop merely adapting to the world—we begin shaping it.
Cross-Cultural Kids are becoming more common every day. In an increasingly interconnected world, perhaps one day all children will be CCKs. By nurturing their transcultural competence and helping them claim their voice today, we are investing in the very leaders who can navigate tomorrow’s complex global landscape.
If you are a CCK, raising one, or leading a cross-cultural team: your journey, your complexity, and your voice matter.

Hi, I'm Wiebke,
As an intercultural coach, I specialize in working with the “multicultural inner team.” I provide you with the tools you need to find balance in your inner home. Perhaps, like me, you are an Adult Third Culture Kid or a Cross-Cultural Kid? If so, this method will be particularly helpful in naming and harmonizing all your cultural influences and personality traits.
Are you ready to understand your story and embrace every piece of your multicultural mosaic?
